Chapter Thirteen

Britanica awoke the next morning a new person. Being in love felt incredible. “Good morning, Mom.”

“Well, good morning. You seem to be in a happy mood this early in the morning.”

“I guess I am. My feet won’t touch the ground. Help! Help!”

“What are you talking about?”

“It feels like I am floating on air,” she replied in a dreamland of thoughts.

Karyn smiled. “Wanna share the reasons for your buoyancy?”

“We’ll talk about it after my run. Do you feel up to following me? I’m going to fix a protein shake first. Please taste it when I’m done. It’s my own recipe.”

“Sure. When you’re ready to go, just let me know.”

Britanica drank her protein shake and dressed warmly for the run. “Mom, I left you a shake on the counter,” Britanica yelled. “I’ll be outside stretching.” She opened the door and walked out onto the porch. Then, she loudly yelled, “Mom, look, it is snowing!”

Karyn took a drink of Britanica’s protein shake. “She thinks this tastes good? Oh, my.” Then she looked out the window and saw Britanica leaping and twirling in the light snowfall. “That girl and snowflakes. It’s so cute to see how excited she gets.”

Britanica was lost in happy thoughts, dancing in the snow when someone snuck up behind her. Before she knew it, a hand covered her mouth. With eyes that revealed terror, her teeth fought to tear into his arm, but her strength was no match for his. She struggled to free herself.

He carried her off to his truck, parked a block down the road. He violently tossed her in the truck’s back seat and tied her up. She kicked and yelled, but he was strong. As he drove off, her panic rose higher in her throat, and she feared she would vomit.

She was overwhelmed by the size of the man. He was huge, and his eyes were icy cold. Above the right side of his chin was a noticeable pockmark. It was obvious he hadn’t bathed in days, as a strong, bitter body odor penetrated the air. She closed her eyes and wrinkled up her nose because of the horrible smell.

When they arrived at their destination, he tossed her into a shabby tent, which provided shelter but not enough warmth. She was terrified and shaking, thinking the very worst thoughts. He gave her one long, icy glance, and left, leaving her alone with her panic.
